MedicAlert is a 24/7 emergency helpline, which means your vital, Myotonic Dystrophy specific health information is available to first responders and health professionals in an emergency. This provides a level of assurance for patients, especially those living a long distance from their specialist DM professional team or whose local NHS may have a limited understanding of the complexities and risks surrounding the condition.
How does MedicAlert work
Your MedicAlert record will hold disease specific information on Myotonic Dystrophy, and how it affects YOU. It will include any other medical conditions, allergies, medications and history, and will make the responder aware of any implants such as ICD’s. Your emergency contacts and special needs (such as if you are a caregiver who has someone at home that needs looking after, or if you have cognitive impairments etc) will also be documented.
Your profile will include any scanned documents that may be useful in an emergency, such as your personalised health management or emergency plans, Advance Care Plans and up to date clinical reports. Your record will be carefully checked by a MedicAlert registered nurse when your account is created, and every time it is updated to ensure it is optimal for use in emergencies.
There are over 60 styles of medical ID jewellery to choose from, each holding the internationally recognised MedicAlert symbol. The jewellery will be engraved with your most vital information, along with the 24/7 emergency helpline and your unique membership number. To ensure confidentiality and protect your identity, there will be no personal information on display.

In an emergency, first responders will be alerted via the jewellery, to the wearer’s most vital medical needs. They can then access the complete record, if required, via the 24/7 helpline from anywhere in the world in over 100 languages and dialects. This information ensures appropriate care decisions and helps avoid potentially fatal errors. This is extremely important for Myotonic Dystrophy where certain pain relief and anaesthetics may need to be avoided.
MedicAlert provides peace of mind that the member’s individual needs will be known when it matters and that someone will speak for you when you need it most.
“At The MedicAlert Foundation, we believe that no one should have to worry about whether their vital medical information will be known in an emergency. Partnering with Cure DM allows us to extend our life-saving service to even more individuals who need it. Their generous commitment to covering the cost of the IDs and first-year memberships will make a tangible, daily difference to their community.” Rob Burley – CEO
